Create Your Life Coaching Business From Scratch: 4 Steps To Get Started Today

Create Your Life Coaching Business From Scratch: 4 Steps To Get Started Today

Thinking about starting your life coaching business?

Well congratulations! It’s such a smart idea, especially right now, when more people than ever are discovering the power of working for themselves.

Fortunately, it’s one of the best ways to start making money right now in the online world. (And yes, all from the comfort of your sofa!)

One of the reasons is because it’s simple to get started: all you really need is you and a platform like Zoom that allows you to speak to your clients.

Plus there’s a low barrier to entry. While there are tons of schools out there offering coaching certification, it’s important to note that coaching is still an unregulated industry.

That means you don’t need to have a certificate to become a coach.

That’s absolutely amazing news for the beginning entrepreneur! You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on certification and you can dive in right now, if you’re feeling ready.

So why not give it a shot? If you’re dreaming about it, take it as a sign that this needs to happen for you! Your dreams are meant for you. All you have to do is take the first step.

With that in mind, I created this simple get started guide to help you launch your life coaching business and start making money ASAP.

Create Your Life Coaching Business From Scratch: 4 Steps To Get Started Today

Create Your Life Coaching Business Step #1:

Find Your Focus

Not sure about what you can coach on? Just think about your own talents and skills.

There’s truly a coaching niche for almost everything: post-baby weight loss coach, divorce coach, career transition coach, public speaking coach.

So think about it: what do you love to do? What do people ask you for help with? What have you gotten paid to do in the past?

Answering all of those questions should give you some great ideas on what you can do as a coach.

Once you’ve nailed your idea, take a look around online to see if there are other people out there doing what you want to do. If there are, that’s great news! That means it’s a viable business idea and that there are people who are willing to pay for this service.

So please don’t get intimidated if you see there are others like you. You don’t have to be the only heart chakra coach in the world to be successful! It’s actually the opposite: the more creative your niche is, the harder you’ll have to work to educate people on what you do. So while you don’t want to be too broad (aka “life coach”) you also probably don’t want to have to go through

Create Your Life Coaching Business Step #2:

Find Your First Clients

The only way to go from “I want to be a coach” to “Heck yes! I am a coach” is to find your first few clients.

But they’re not going to come knocking down your door just yet! It’s up to you to go out and find those first precious clients.

So now that you’ve decided on what to help people with, think about it: do you already already know anyone who could use your help? Then go ahead and reach out to them. Tell them what you do and how you can help them.

I’d recommend taking on a few clients for free at first or charging them a lower-than-normal price. The important thing is just to get started! That way you can build up your confidence as a coach and get some experience and testimonials all at the same time.

If you can’t think of anyone in person that you can help, think about joining some Facebook groups or DMing a few people on Instagram. (Remember to lead with service first–and never spam people!) Facebook groups in particular are a great way to find people who are already out there looking for someone just like you to help them out.

But honestly, you just need to start telling people what you do and offering to help them. You can find potential clients almost anywhere, including in the morning coffee queue at Starbucks. So keep your eyes open!

Create Your Life Coaching Business Step #3:

Build Your Online Presence

Your business is already on its way to becoming your full-time gig! Now it’s just a matter of expansion: or putting yourself out into the world! However, don’t assume that means you need a fancy website, kickass branding, the whole bit. One of the advantages of a coaching business is that you can start very small, just through Instagram or Facebook (or wherever).

But it is important to start putting yourself out there. Consistency creates trust. Plus social media is still the best (free!) way to find your ideal clients.

My best advice is to pick one or two platforms to focus your attention on. I learned this one the hard way! In the beginning, I tried to do allllll the things (blogging, YouTube, podcast) but it was easy to get overwhelmed and burnt out. And it’s not that effective in the end either.

It’s a much better use of your time to get really good at one or two platforms and then use those platforms to leverage your social in other areas.

So choose your platforms and commit to showing up: do your daily Instagram post, daily Facebook lives, daily Facebook group posts. Anything you choose to do (and ultimately learn how to do well) will eventually get you in front of the right people and ultimately grow your business.

And PS–don’t get caught up on your social media follower numbers! There are a ton of successful coaches out there with 1000 followers or less who still make six figures a year. The most important thing is whether you’re booking clients not how many people say your Instagram story about your new puppy.

So tell me: are you pumped up and ready to start your coaching business? What step are you going to take first?

Starting a new life coaching business is not as hard as you might think! Just try not to get overwhelmed in the beginning and stop chasing shiny objects. As long as you focus on showing up to serve your clients in the best way possible, you’re basically gauranteed to be successful!

Why Being A “Life Coach” Will Make You Broke: 3 Problems & How To Fix Them!

by: Jenn

Why Being A "Life Coach" Will Make You Broke: 3 Problems & How To Fix Them!

When I first heard about life coaching, I was like saaaaaay what? Helping people become their best selves? Hello, sign me up right now, right freakin’ now!

And since you’re reading this, I imagine you had the same experience! Maybe you’ve started your life coaching practice already. You’ve taken some classes and you’re excited to get going.

But I’m also going to guess that it’s not going as well as you’d hoped.

You KNOW you have the skills.

You KNOW you can help people!

So why isn’t anyone signing up?

Let me tell you friends! I have so been there.

And the good news is: it’s not all YOUR fault.

As always, my aim here on this site is to help you avoid the (MANY!) mistakes I made when starting my spiritual business. And this is definitely one of them!

Why Being A Life Coach Will Make You Broke! 3 Problems & How To Fix Them

Reason Being A Life Coach Will Make You Broke #1:

People Only Buy Solutions

You can show people your certificates and talk about yourself all day long. So while I kind of hate to break it to you but here’s the truth: no one cares.

Yup that’s right! It’s harsh but true. No one really cares about who you studied with, what modality you use, who your other clients were.

But they do care about what you can do for them.

This is really just a misunderstanding on our part. We talk about our credits and assume that other people will just understand what that means for them!

But it doesn’t work like that! You have to actually tell people how you can help them, in the most specific way possible.

You need to know what their problem is. And then you simply need to have a solution to that problem.

So in order to stop your business from tanking before you’ve even begun (yikes!), you have to stop telling them your audience about what doesn’t matter to them and start being extremely clear about what you can help them fix.

Reason Being A Life Coach Will Make You Broke #2:

The Title Isn’t Enough

Those of us in the coaching world often forget that we exist largely in our own little bubble. When you talk about life coaching to other life coaches or to people who are really into personal development, they obviously know what that means.

However, to anyone outside of our little world, the term “life coach” is still kind of vague and misunderstood.

I’ve met people who think that I just tell other people what to do all day! Which is pretty hilarious honestly. (And, just in case you don’t know, completely untrue!)

But it’s not up to the world to figure out what we do! It’s up to us to tell them.

That means part of our marketing needs to be about education. Yes, of course you’re a life coach (or a transformation coach, manifestation coach, happiness coach etc.)

But what do you really do? How can you explain that in the most simple way possible?

In other words, don’t just slap the words life coach on your Instagram and just post pictures of your smoothies. That’s not enough for anyone to get it–much less for them to make the leap to come and actually want to work with from you!

Tell them what you. Then do it again. And again. And keep doing whatever you have to to make sure your message is unmistakable!

Reason Being A Life Coach Will Make You Broke #3:

They Need To See The Transformation

Even when you have a specific problem that you can help people with, you have to weave a little more magic to make things more irresistible.

For example: say you’re a confidence coach. You help people go from anxiety to feeling confident and powerful!

That’s a great start. But what does that process actually look like? How can you illustrate it to your potential clients?

This where the art of storytelling comes in extremely handy.

Think about your “before” and your “after” and then paint your audience a picture of both.

What would someone’s life be like when they feel crippled by self-doubt?

What would they experience to finally move beyond that?

Tell them a story about it and they will automatically understand the true magic of who you are and what you do. Stories are the best way to show off your potential and to help them see where you fit into their world.

If you’re feeling stuck about this, think about your own transformation or the journey of someone you’ve already worked with.

Also, don’t assume people will just “get it” from skimming your bio! If this process is the magic you want to base your business on, you need to put that at the forefront of what you write as often as possible.

Don’t you dare think that your lack of clients is because you can’t make it as a spiritual entrepreneur! Once you tweak these few basic points on your website and in your social media marketing, you’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to book yourself out with clients who really want to work with you.

8 Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! | Passive Income For Life Coaches + Spiritual Entrepreneurs

by: Jenn

8 Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! | Passive Income For Life Coaches + Spiritual Entrepreneurs

Becoming a spiritual entrepreneur is one of the best things I ever did for myself!

(The other really-great-thing was moving to Europe! But don’t worry: I’m not here to convince you to do that. 😂 )

But truth be told, the road to success was not easy for me.

In fact, I struggled a lot, especially in the beginning.

And that’s exactly why I’m so passionate today about sharing what I’ve learned along my spiritual boss babe journey!

I do love coaching and for me that’s the ultimate experience: helping someone one-on-one to shift something powerful in their world!

But obviously coaching has it’s limitations:

For one thing, there’s only one of you! So how do you scale your business?

And two, it can be hard to land those dreamy clients, especially when you’re just starting out!

Booking out your schedule with the right coaching clients is hugely important to the success of your business (and I’m not suggesting you stop doing that!).

But what if you could take some of the pressure off by making passive income as your business grows?

In fact, one of the biggest reasons you might not be booking clients is because you feel so desperate about making money. If you could make enough money through passive income to cover your financial bases, then that desperation would no longer be an issue!

That’s why I love passive income as a business model and I’m hugely passionate about it. In fact, that’s what I mostly talk about about over in my signature program Pin Magic!

But you might still be wondering: what can I offer as a life coach, health coach, nutritionist, tarot card reader etc.?

If you’ve never done this before, it might be difficult to think outside the box about what you can offer that will be useful to your audience and make you money. So today I’m here to give you some passive income inspiration!

8 Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! | Passive Income For Life Coaches + Spiritual Entrepreneurs

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #1:

The Mini-Course

A full-blown digital program is what people tend to want to start out with in the world of passive income. But I actually suggest that you don’t.

For one thing, it’s time consuming to create! Yes, if you knew you would sell it 100 times over then it would be worth the investment. But most coaches and spiritual types who are just starting out need to test their ideas first.

The perfect solution to that is a digital mini-course: think small, short lessons delivered over a week or two.

At the end of the day, your potential customer doesn’t really care about how long something is. In fact, most of the time the shorter the better! So focus on a problem you can solve and work on packaging that up in easy bite-sized pieces.

Also, if your idea takes off, you’ll also know that this might be a great area to come back and do a full digital course about later!

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #2:

The Digital Masterclass

A digital masterclass is a similar idea to a mini-course. In a masterclass, you typically create 1-2 hours of video content (plus maybe a workbook). You can divide the video up into smaller pieces or deliver it all in one go.

Again, keep the focus on the problem you’re solving! If you can solve a problem for a potential customer in just an hour or two, of course people will be happy to pay!

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #3:

The Workbook

A workbook is an especially great idea for coaches. It’s easy to put together and has the potential to offer a powerful transformation to your customers.

Think about what kinds of questions and activities you normally do with your clients. How can you put that into a book format? Again, a workbook doesn’t have to be huge in order to create results.

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #4:

The Printable

Printables are hugely popular, especially when it comes to Pinterest. People just love having unique daily worksheets, planners, templates…you name it!

So think about it: what kind of printable could you create that would solve a problem for your dream customer? Whether that’s tracking mindfulness meditations or workouts, there are tons of ways to do this that create change for your people and put money in your bank account!

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #5:

The Tutorial

Tutorials are another amazing way to help out your audience and put money in your bank account. So think about it: what process or activity would your dream clients love you to guide them through?

Think of this as digitally holding their hand while they do something important. As for the format you can get creative. A great tutorial can be a screenshare of you doing something on your laptop, step-by-step written instructions or even an audio training! It’s another simple way you can create something of lasting value quickly that will keep working for you for a long time.

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #6:

The Ebook

Ebooks might sound like a huge time commitment to create. But again, there’s no need to get carried away and create an actual full-length book!

Just like a digital program, a profitable ebook solves a problem for someone.
Again, for the average person, length isn’t really an issue. As long as you’re being clear about what you can help with, people will be willing to pay for your expertise.

As a bonus, if you’re shy around video or audio, this might be a great choice for you!

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #7:

The Guidebook

A simple guide is another great way to package up your expertise in a way that’s effective and profitable. But again be problem focused: what transformation or process could you lead your customer through? This could be creating a healthy meal plan, how to create business goals or a process to help improve relationships. The more simple and straightforward you can make this, the better!

Digital Products You Can Make In A Weekend! Idea #8:

The Bundle

A bundle is a great way to give your audience a lot of value without a lot of extra effort from you. For example, I’ve seen coaches take down a bunch of their Facebook livestreams and turn that into a bundle that they can sell.

Think about your existing content and brainstorm on how you could package it all up. Maybe you have some workbooks and videos already that could pack a more powerful punch if you combined the.

Don’t have existing content? That’s okay because you can always design your bundle from scratch! Again, as with everything else, just stay focused on what transformation you’re offering your audience and keep everything in your bundle highly-focused on that.

So tell me: which digital product are you going to implement this weekend? What else can you do starting today to make passive income into your future?

The world of online business and marketing can be hugely overwhelming at times, especially to the spiritual entrepreneur who’s just starting out! But I want you to take a deep breath, look at this list and know that you’ve got this. Everyone has a profitable digital product idea inside them! All you have to do now is follow through to let it out!

How To Start Your Spiritual Business Blog In 2020 (Step By Step Guide!)

by: Jenn

How To Start Your Spiritual Business Blog In 2020 (Step By Step Guide!)

Starting your own spiritual business?

Then you’ll probably want to start a blog to go along with it!

Of course, I’m biased because that’s how I started out. And ultimately how you found me here today on The Aligned Life!

Blogging has given me opportunities that I never even realized existed. While not every online business needs a blog, I do still believe it’s the best place to start for the budding spiritual boss babe.

Why You Need A Blog For Your Spiritual Business

A blog is a place where you can show off your expertise, which will help people to trust you and, in turn, to purchase your products or services.

This used to be the only way to do this. Of course, today there’s now Instagram, YouTube, podcasting etc.

But while social media is great, it’s good to remember that you’re building on someone else’s property. Facebook could literally start charging for every post starting tomorrow! If that was the only place you built an audience, then you’d have to spend a lot of money just to reach your own potential customers and clients.

Blogging is in your hands. It’s your site, your words and your rules, which is great! Plus when you combine it with building an email list, you’re creating a way to build an audience that will always be 100% yours.

(Note: this post contains affiliate links which mean I get a small payment. This comes at no extra cost to you and I only endorse companies and products that I use and that I’m happy with!)

When I first started blogging, getting this stuff up and running was terrifying. In fact, I followed along with some instructions I found online that were much like this post! So please don’t freak out. If I could learn it, then so can you. Just commit to getting it done! Go grab yourself a coffee or tea and set aside about 45 minutes to walk yourself through the basics.

How To Start Your Spiritual Business Blog – in 2020 (Step-By-Step Guide!)

Step #1:

Choose Your Blogging Platform

The first step is choosing what kind of software you want to use for your blog. My personal preference is WordPress. I know it’s a bit intimidating to the beginner but know this: WordPress is responsible for 35% of ALL websites on the internet! It’s been around for a long time, can do a bunch of different things for you and once you get over the initial learning curve, it really is straightforward! (Trust me!)

However, if you’re really WordPress-averse there are other options. One solid one is Squarespace, which offers an easy-to-use interface but it is a lot less customizable than WordPress. Plus it works on a monthly payment plan, which I don’t like personally. But if you do, you can cross off a bunch of steps on this list in one fell swoop.

(Another all-in-one beginner friendly option is Wix.)

Please note that I definitely do not recommend a non-self-hosted blog option such as Blogger, WordPress.com or Tumblr. The URLs are a dead giveaway that these are free services and that does not look good for any business.

Step #2:

Get A Domain

I might be a bit of a Nerdy Nerd but there’s nothing like buying a fresh new domain name to play around with! I admit that I’ve gotten a little carried away with this in the past. But you don’t need to go and buy a ton of names to get started!

Picking one domain name and purchasing it is a great start. If you don’t have a business name yet, consider picking your own name. (That’s always a good bet!)

I use Ionos to purchase my domains. Please note that once you make the purchase, you’ll have to connect your domain to your new hosting account. (More on that in the next step!)

If you chose Squarespace, you can hook up your domain and hosting all together.

NOTE: I assume that you already know what your business name is or what you want to blog about! If you don’t, then take some time to think about this. And don’t be surprised if your first choice is taken! If you’re just about to start a coaching business for example, your name + coaching is a great choice. I would also definitely go for the .com wherever you can for an extra layer of professionalism.

How To Start Your Spiritual Business Blog In 2020 (Step By Step Guide!)

Step #3:

Purchase Your Hosting

Your hosting is where your site’s data “lives”. Basically, we’re renting digital space somewhere for your blog to live on (like you renting your apartment!).

I’ve used Bluehost for my domain hosting for years and I’ve always been really happy with their service! I really like their interface and the fact that you can install WordPress in one click. (But more on that in the next step!)

(This is an affiliate link which means I get a percentage as a bonus–at no cost to you.)

I’ve also used GreenGeeks in the past. And again, if you chose Squarespace or Wix, it’s all included in your basic service package.

Step #4:

Install WordPress

If you’ve installed Bluehost on your site, just log into your Bluehost account, click on WordPress and install WordPress on the appropriate domain. It’s super easy (and I have a video tutorial on exactly how to do this in my Spiritual Rebel B-School)

If you didn’t use Bluehost, then hop on over to WordPress right here to download the latest release.

You’ll also have to upload WordPress to your site yourself but I promise that with most hosting providers, this is simple and quick!

If you chose Wix or Squarepsace, you can go ahead and skip this step too. (You little rebel!)

Step #5:

Design Your Site

Once WordPress is installed on your website, it’s time for the fun part!

Start off by logging into your fresh new site on your WordPress admin page (usually called: www.yourblognamehere.com/wp-admin )

The WordPress interface might seem a little scary at first but don’t worry! It’s going to start making sense very soon.

WordPress has tons of free themes for you to browse and install. Scroll down the menu on the left side of the WordPress interface and click on Appearance —> Themes. Then click on the “Add New” button at the top of the screen and have a scroll through the options there.

While many are free, some are paid. If you’re just starting out, a free theme will do the job just fine!

As for you Wix and Squarespace users, both of those platforms offer free templates to get started with. They also have some drag-and-drop options for you to play around with.

But no matter what you’re using, don’t go too wild with the design just yet! Let’s finish setting up the blog first. You’ll have plenty of time to come back and fine tune things.

Step #6:

Create Your Static Pages

Your site doesn’t do much unless it has some content on it! You will need an “About” page at the very minimum! You’ll probably also want a “Contact” page and perhaps a Terms and Conditions page. Later on you’ll need a good 404 page, but the About page is enough to get started.

To create a page, navigate to Pages –> Add New. Then go ahead and add your content!

I would also suggest setting up a sample blog post to get started. Just click on Posts –> Add New. For your test page, I would just put “Test” in the title and a few words in the body. Then hit “publish”. We’re just going to use this page a placeholder for now! Once your site is ready you’ll want to go back and put some actual content in here.

Step #6:

Create Your Menu

Don’t skip this step! Every website needs a menu so that your viewers can easily navigate their way around.

To get started, click on Appearance —> Menus in your WordPress dashboard. Then click “Create A New Menu”. I suggest calling yours “Main Menu” or “Top Navigation” or something that will remind you of where your menu will live. Most themes will offer you the choice of a top-of-the-page menu and a footer menu. I would just do a top menu for now and save the bottom menu for a later time (if you ever even need it).

Then go ahead and add your important pages from the pull-down list on the left-hand side. (You will probably want your About page and a blog page to get started.) Rearrange the pages into whatever order you prefer simply by dragging them up and down.

Once you’re finished, click save and voila! You now have a menu for your readers to find your most important pages.

Step #6:

Set Up Your Blog Naming

The way your blog is organized is incredibly important, both for the real humans reading your site and for Google (& SEO in general). SEO means Search Engine Optimization–and it’s a whole art unto itself! However, for our beginner purposes all you really need to know is that you need to use keywords throughout your site to help Google find you.

Keywords are really just the words you would use normally! For example, if you’re starting an intuitive tarot reading service, you’ll want to make sure you actually use the words “intuitive tarot” many times on your site.

SEO also matters when it comes to setting up your site! If you’re not careful, the default WordPress naming for your blog pages will be something like this: www.yoursite.com/blog/?p=13756 And that tells Google absolutely nothing about what your blog is about!

So let’s make sure we fix that!

Go to Settings —> Permalinks and click the box to check “Post Name”. That way the URL of each of your posts will be the title of the post itself–not just some weird numbers that are basically useless.

How To Start Your Spiritual Business Blog In 2020 (Step By Step Guide!)

Step #7:

Create Your Content

Your website is basically your digital business card! It’s often the first impression anyone will have of you so you’ve got to make sure you get it right.

At the very minimum, you need an About Page which tells the world who you are, what you do and why you do it. (Your story is very important here so make sure you tell it!)

But is an about page going to keep people coming back for more?

Of course not! That’s where your blog comes into play.

Your blog is your chance to begin to show off your unique knowledge and skills. I know some people feel a little strangely about this at first (“Why would anyone buy from me if I give away information for free?”)

However, if people don’t know you or trust you, they’re never going to buy from you! Blogging gives you the chance to show off your skills. And yes, even if you do give a ton of knowledge away for free, someone is always going to want to pay you for it anyway.

However, if you are really blog-adverse, there are other options! You can kick things off with a few Instagram or Facebook posts as well! Just make sure that no matter what kind of content you’re creating, you’re always sending people to your site to sign up for your email list.

Step #7:

Fine Tune Your Design

It’s only at this point that I really give you the go ahead to dive in a play around with what your blog looks like! Think branding: choosing colors, logo, fonts and style that will resonate with your ideal client. Of course, that’s a whole art unto itself but you can get started by yourself and let things change over time. (That’s what I do!) So you don’t necessarily have to hire this out to a graphic designer to get started.

I know lots of people waste tons of time waiting for their perfect logo before they start putting themselves out there–so let me tell you this: at first, no one cares! Don’t put too much effort into the things that don’t matter.

If you have Photoshop at home, then you’ve got everything you need. But if you’re lacking in the design skills department, I’d recommend Canva as an easy way to do everything you need to do to get started.

Just remember to stick to a general theme and don’t go crazy over-designing things and making every single image look like it came from a different site.

PS–want to get really into your design? I’ve really fallen in love with Elementor lately, which is a free WordPress plugin that allows you to drag and drop and design your little heart away. I’ve used both the paid and free versions and I can highly recommend it!
