Why MRR Products & PLR Products Are Bad For Your Business
If you’ve been in the digital products space for a while, you’ve probably seen people encouraging you to sell MRR products (or PLR products).
It all sounds great at first: easy money. Low barrier to entry. Just promote and watch the money roll in, right?
Wrong!
The idea of selling digital products without creating them yourself is undeniably tempting. Master Resell Rights (MRR) products promise a quick path to passive income.
But the reality is often quite different! Today I’m sharing some of the major reasons why you shouldn’t use MRR products for your business.
What Are MRR Products?
MRR (Master Resell Rights) products are digital products that grant the purchaser the right to resell the product to others, often with the same resale rights.
This means you can not only sell the product yourself but also allow your customers to resell it to their own customers.
This is a popular business model, especially in the online world, as it allows entrepreneurs to earn passive income from a single product. Common examples of MRR products include ebooks, software, templates, and online courses.
What Are PLR Products?
PLR (Private Label Rights) products are digital products that grant the purchaser the right to rebrand and resell the product as their own.
This means you can modify the product’s content, add your own branding, and sell it under your own name. Unlike MRR products, PLR products typically do not allow the purchaser to grant resale rights to their customers.
This makes PLR products ideal for those who want to create a unique product but don’t have the time or resources to start from scratch.
While MRR and PLR products are slightly different, today we’re talking about why they’re both bad for your business.
The Problems With MRR Products & PLR Products
1. You Have Built-In Competition
While at first it sounds great to sell something you put almost no effort into, the reality can be a harsh wake-up call. You will not be the only person selling the MRR product (or PLR product). That means, you already have a lot of competition.
2. Overcrowded Market
What’s worse, is that you will be competing against people selling the exact same thing as you. That means it’s you must rely on your marketing efforts alone to make your products stand out.
If you’re just a beginner in the online world, it’s very difficult to do this. There are likely to be marketers out there with a lot more experience and a lot more clients already, making it difficult for you to compete.
3. Lack of Authenticity
Most MRR or PLR products are very generic sounding. That means they will not reflect your unique personality, style, or values. Ultimately, this might not serve your audience well or might even be outright harmful to your overall brand.
If you do decide to sell MRR please go over what you’re selling to make sure it’s accurate, current, and in-line with your values. It’s also great to throw in your own unique advice or tips. However, doing this sometimes means it’s easier to just begin from scratch.
4. Limited Customization
Some MRR products simply don’t allow you much freedom to change things or customize them to meet your needs. Again, please be sure to look over your potential products to ensure they’re in line with your values. If not, then double check to ensure you can change them to meet your specific needs.
5. Potential Legal Issues
MRR resellers must still understand what they can and can’t do with their products. Always make sure you check out the licensing and legal terms to avoid getting into any legal trouble.
Why You Should Build Your Own Digital Products Instead
Instead of relying on MRR products, consider creating your own digital offerings. This approach offers several advantages:
Offer Your Unique Value
These days, the only way to make sure you have little to no competition is to rely heavily on your personal brand and what makes you unique in the market.
Your own products can be tailored to your expertise and audience, providing a unique value. You can add your own personality and style to ensure you have something that no one else can offer–therefore eliminating your competition.
Brand Build Your Brand
Ultimately, a successful business is all about creating trust with your community. Creating original content helps you build your brand, share your unique message, and establish you as an authority with your audience.
Create Your Own Intellectual Property
While the thought of building a digital product from scratch can be daunting, in the long term it’s much better for your business. Remember, everything you create is part of your own intellectual property. As a digital business, this is everything.
A product you build today can be sold over and over again for years to come. You can sell it as-is, use it as a bonus for another program, or offer it as a sale for a limited time. The options are endless! But since you own all the product and everything in it, you have maximum control and ownership.
Long-Term Sustainability
For me, it’s helpful to think of your business as an eco-system. Over time, you build out a series of products, courses and offerings that all compliment each other. However, selling other people’s products makes it way more difficult to do this. Ultimately, building your own digital product suite will lead to a more sustainable and profitable online business in the long run.

Final Thoughts On MRR Products
While MRR products may seem like an easy way to make money online, the long-term benefits of creating your own digital products far outweigh the risks. By leveraging your unique expertise and building authentic relationships with your audience, you can create a sustainable and profitable online business.
