How To Build Your Coaching Business From Scratch in 2025
Ready to build your coaching business?
Well, congratulations friend! It’s such a smart idea, especially right now, when more people than ever are discovering the power of working for themselves.
Fortunately, it’s one of the best ways to start making money right now in the online world. (And yes, all from the comfort of your sofa!)
One of the reasons is because it’s simple to get started: all you really need is you and a platform like Zoom that allows you to speak to your clients.
Plus there’s a low barrier to entry. While there are tons of schools out there offering coaching certification, it’s important to note that coaching is still an unregulated industry.
That means you don’t need to have a certificate to become a coach.
That’s absolutely amazing news for the beginning entrepreneur! You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on certification and you can dive in right now, if you’re feeling ready.
So why not give it a shot? If you’re dreaming about it, take it as a sign that this needs to happen for you! Your dreams are meant for you. All you have to do is take the first step.
With that in mind, I created this simple get started guide to help you launch your life coaching business and start making money ASAP.
Build Your Coaching Business From Scratch in 2025: 4 Steps To Get Started Today
Build Your Coaching Business Step #1: Find Your Focus
Not sure about what you can coach on? Just think about your own talents and skills.
There’s truly a coaching niche for almost everything: post-baby weight loss coach, divorce coach, career transition coach, public speaking coach.
So think about it: what do you love to do? What do people ask you for help with? What have you gotten paid to do in the past?
Answering all of those questions should give you some great ideas on what you can do as a coach.
Once you’ve nailed your idea, take a look around online to see if there are other people out there doing what you want to do. If there are, that’s great news! That means it’s a viable business idea and that there are people who are willing to pay for this service.
So please don’t get intimidated if you see there are others like you. You don’t have to be the only heart chakra coach in the world to be successful! It’s actually the opposite: the more creative your niche is, the harder you’ll have to work to educate people on what you do. So while you don’t want to be too broad (aka “life coach”) you also probably don’t want to have to go through
Build Your Coaching Business Step #2: Find Your First Clients
The only way to go from “I want to be a coach” to “Heck yes! I am a coach” is to find your first few clients.
But they’re not going to come knocking down your door just yet! It’s up to you to go out and find those first precious clients.
So now that you’ve decided on what to help people with, think about it: do you already already know anyone who could use your help? Then go ahead and reach out to them. Tell them what you do and how you can help them.
I’d recommend taking on a few clients for free at first or charging them a lower-than-normal price. The important thing is just to get started! That way you can build up your confidence as a coach and get some experience and testimonials all at the same time.
If you can’t think of anyone in person that you can help, think about joining some Facebook groups or DMing a few people on Instagram. (Remember to lead with service first–and never spam people!) Facebook groups in particular are a great way to find people who are already out there looking for someone just like you to help them out.
But honestly, you just need to start telling people what you do and offering to help them. You can find potential clients almost anywhere, including in the morning coffee queue at Starbucks. So keep your eyes open!
Build Your Coaching Business Step #3: Build Your Online Presence
Your business is already on its way to becoming your full-time gig! Now it’s just a matter of expansion: or putting yourself out into the world! However, don’t assume that means you need a fancy website, kickass branding, the whole bit. One of the advantages of a coaching business is that you can start very small, just through Instagram or Facebook (or wherever).
But it is important to start putting yourself out there. Consistency creates trust. Plus social media is still the best (free!) way to find your ideal clients.
My best advice is to pick one or two platforms to focus your attention on. I learned this one the hard way! In the beginning, I tried to do allllll the things (blogging, YouTube, podcast) but it was easy to get overwhelmed and burnt out. And it’s not that effective in the end either.
It’s a much better use of your time to get really good at one or two platforms and then use those platforms to leverage your social in other areas.
So choose your platforms and commit to showing up: do your daily Instagram post, daily Facebook lives, daily Facebook group posts. Anything you choose to do (and ultimately learn how to do well) will eventually get you in front of the right people and ultimately grow your business.
And PS–don’t get caught up on your social media follower numbers! There are a ton of successful coaches out there with 1000 followers or less who still make six figures a year. The most important thing is whether you’re booking clients not how many people say your Instagram story about your new puppy.
So tell me: are you pumped up and ready to start your coaching business? What step are you going to take first?
Building a coaching business is not as hard as you might think! Just try not to get overwhelmed in the beginning and stop chasing shiny objects. As long as you focus on showing up to serve your clients in the best way possible, you’re almost guaranteed success!
